Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipal Assembly in the Western North Region has elected Mr. Augustine Ackon as its new Presiding Member (PM), after inaugurating the 9th Assembly of the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipal Assembly held on Monday, 12th February 2024 at the Municipal Assembly Hall.
The elected PM doubles as a professional teacher, the headmaster of Beposo Senior High School and a former Assembly member of the Chirano electoral area.Speaking however to journalist after his election expressed his appreciation to his colleagues for the trust posed in him.
“When the EC official called for people who are interested to come and pick form, I and Hon. Kwame Asamoah, former Presiding Member and Assembly Member of the Bibiani Estate Electoral Area, filed and submitted it. After the first round, I pulled 30 votes and Hon. Kwame Asamoah also garnered 23 votes and none of us got a two-thirds majority as stipulated in the 1992 constitution and the Local Government Act, so the election proceeded to a second round and my younger brother, Hon. Kwame Asamoah pulled out of the contest in the development's interest of the Municipality and at the end of the second voting Mr. Francis Addai Boateng, District Electoral Commission Officer announced I have got 36 votes being the requisite figure to cross the line as a winner under the Article 244(1) of the 1992 Constitution all took part in the polls to in a quest to attain the mandatory two-thirds of the votes cast by the entire Assembly members present Interestingly,17 members dissented and Her Worship Beatrice Boatemaa Damoah, Bibiani District Court Judge did the sworing in , he said.
“So I deem as a great honor done me by my colleagues because I did little work regarding electing this position. They asked me to go for it and they will give me their necessary support,” the new PM said.
Mr. Augustine Ackon added that the gesture exhibited by other members of the assembly justifies how unifying the house is, and expects giving them to make the municipality develop.
“It means we are having a unity of purpose in the house now to carry Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai forward. So all that I can say is to show appreciation to the honorable members for the great honor done me.
